Make it a contract requirement.

Use explainability tools from day one, not as damage control. SHAP, LIME, and interpretability libraries aren't perfect, but they reduce the months-long explanations later. Budget $30,000-$60,000 for proper instrumentation and training.

Simplify your AI architecture to reduce audit surface area. The fewer vendors, APIs, and data sources your AI touches, the smaller your audit scope and the faster audits go. This saves money long-term and reduces compliance risk.

Get your insurance broker involved early. Find out what's not covered before you deploy the system, not after it breaks in production and you're fighting with your carrier.

Assign audit ownership now. Don't wait until a regulator asks. Have someone own the ongoing audit documentation from day one. Maintaining audit documentation is cheaper than retroactively building it.

The audit cost crisis isn't going away. Regulators are getting smarter about AI, but they're also getting more cautious. And vendors know compliance is now a cost center, so they're building it into their pricing.
